Harmful Effect Of Air Pollution On Health And Permanent Solution To Improve The Condition!

Delhi is always known as the most polluted city in the world, especially during the festive and plantation season from October-January, making it extremely difficult to breathe. Every year the air condition deteriorates to enormously dangerous levels showering smoke and dust particular which comes up with an endless number of diseases.

Vehicular pollutants have harmful effects on both ecology and human health. The human harmful effects of air pollution have severe effects on health conditions and skin as well as early death. These dust pollutants directly affect the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. In short, high levels of Suspended Particulate and Sulphur dioxide Matter are associated with increased death, illness and weakened respiratory function. In such conditions, the doctor suggests for a mask and preventing going outdoors but Is it the Permanent Solution to reduce air pollution?

These months fall between the religious festivals in Delhi and plantation season in Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh which is the bordering state of Delhi. It is found that the air quality gets worse as an outcome of Diwali firecrackers that people burns during the festival.

As a result, the government took the initiative of banning firecrackers in 2017, similarly, in 2018, the Supreme Court of India announced the complete ban of firecrackers and gave a strict timing for burning firecrackers on 7th November, between 8 pm- 10 pm.

The toxic levels of air pollution in Delhi and nearby states are creating quite a menace. This adds to the severity of the changing weather the changing which locks the polluted air in the air making the situation dangerous. Every second doctor warn people to step outdoors to avoid consequences.

Reason for Deteriorated Air Quality

  1. Plantation: Delhi shares its border with states like Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana. One of the main causes of the worsening of air pollution levels in Delhi is crops burned by the farmers in these states. Farmers burn rice stubbles that are estimated at roughly 35 million tonnes. The wind brings all the dust particles and pollutants to all the nearby states and places.
  2. Traffic: Pollution caused by the traffic menace in Delhi contributes to this air pollution. This year the air quality index turned to ‘severe’ levels. Vehicular emissions increased the hazardous level of air pollution and dangerous health effects.
  3. Seasonal Effect: As the winter season arrives, pollutants and dust particles become stagnant. Due to stagnant winds, and no rain, these pollutants get scattered in the air and add the hazardous air condition resulting in smog cover.
  4. Population: Over-population in the capital city and its activities contribute to bad air quality and noise pollution
  5. Week public infrastructure: Investment of less money on public infrastructure and its equipment is the reason for air pollution. Investment in public transport and infrastructure improves air quality and also enhances the economic condition.
  6. Large-scale construction: In a metro city like Delhi, large-scale construction is every day which is to a large extent culprit adding to dangerous dust particles and smog in the air. Delhi Government stalled a number of construction sites, considering the severe air quality
  7. Diwali: This auspicious festival largely worsens the air condition, despite the ban on firecrackers, and cracker sales consequently for 2 years. However, after 9 continuous days of smog cover in Delhi in 2017 and the impact on health conditions, people still continued burning firecrackers contributing to the dangerous air quality.

What are the harmful effects of smog?

  • Effects on the cardiovascular system, worsening cardiovascular disease symptoms, mostly angina; and also affects the nervous system, affects fetuses, young children, sick, impairing physical coordination, anaemic, vision, creating nausea, judgments, headaches, increasing personal discomfort, and reducing productivity.
  • Increases vulnerability to pulmonary diseases, infections, impairment of lung function and nose, eye, and throat irritations.
  • It might worsen pre-existing cardiac and lung functions along with chronic coughing, shortness of breath, and wheezing.
  • The Fine particulate substance may be poisonous in itself or may transmit toxic consisting of carcinogenic trace substances, and can weaken the immune system. Fine particulates enter deep into the respiratory system infuriating lung tissue and affecting long-term disorders.
  • Impairs kidney and liver cause brain damage in young children causing lower I.Q., reduced ability to concentrate, and hyperactivity.

What are the preventive measures you can take?

People should find out a permanent solution to pollution and every single person should contribute equally toward improving the air quality without blaming the government. The Government makes policies and we the people should know our responsibility towards our country and respect the policy. Instead of thinking of the entire country as our dustbin and throwing garbage everywhere, every single person should understand the severity of the condition and keep the country clean by using dustbins as garbage places.

Secondly, even after suffering from dangerous diseases due to severe air pollution people continue burning crackers which should be completely stopped. Diwali is a festival of love, light and sharing happiness, not to contribute to negative impact. With the emergence of Industrialization, tree and forests have been completely abolished in cities for building and industries. Thus more and more trees should be planted everywhere to balance temperature and improve the air condition of India. The Government should invest more in infrastructure and its equipment and people should in a proper way as their own property.
