The Mystical Thoughts Of Sri Sri Sankaradeva And Sri Sri Madhavadeva

This book is a good exposition of the philosophy of the two vaisnavite saints of Assam, whose religious tradition is being continued today through institutions such as Namghars and Sattras and whose contributions to the socio-cultural cum religious life of Assamese people are tremendous. Sri Sri Sankaradeva and Sri Sri Madhavadeva propagated the religion of Neo-Vaisnavism and developed devotional mysticism in Assam.

It is a unique and non-conventional type of mysticism, in the sense that it only leads the devotees towards divine union disregarding all sorts of social, economic, religious, ritualistic or customary barriers, but also aims at the upliftment of early existence through creativity, humanism, freedom, morality, equality, love and justice considering their pragmatic values.

Even at this crucial period of human history, the mystical insight as visualised by these two great mystics might be a guiding light to fulfil the much-needed spiritual upliftment of the people.

In the present study, An attempt has been made to highlight the mystical thoughts of Sri Sri Sankaradeva and Sri Sri Madhavadeva, the saints and social reformers of the fifteen century Assam. Among the mystics who belonged to the medieval period in Indian History, Sankaradeva and Madhavadeva are unparalleled from various points of view.

They started a progressive and democratic movement in order to redeem the Assamese society from the grip of socio-religious disharmony. Their mission was to reawaken the spiritual consciousness in people, to teach them dharma in its proper sense, to bring social equality among all sections of people, irrespective of caste and creed and to liberate people from ignorance and suffering.

The mystical realisation is not an individual experience. It is the rise of the inner spirit in men to realise its supremacy through matter, life, mind and God. They upheld optimistic views towards life, propagated activity ethics and denounced asceticism.

It is my humble attempt to reach a large audience in the form of the present book in order to bring out the sublime thoughts of these two great personalities of the world.
